Passage

Passage

Method & sources

A briefing is only as trustworthy as its weakest fact. Passage is built on claims — each a plain statement carrying its evidence type, the date it reflects, its source, and how sure we are. The dashboard’s area scores use a published index where one exists and an indicative band for the categorical facts — hover any score to see what it aggregates.

How to read a claim

Every fact is tagged two ways.

Evidence type — what kind of thing it is:

LawPublished indexReported practiceOfficial advisoryPeer-reported

Certainty — how sure we are:

EstablishedLimited dataAnecdotal

A statement about the letter of the law is not a promise about lived experience. Where we only have limited or anecdotal evidence, we say so rather than dress it up as precision.

How severity is decided

  • Critical — a big change, or anything the destination criminalises, enforces or prohibits that is relevant to you.
  • Notable — a meaningful shift, or a new legal duty with a short deadline (address registration, insurance).
  • Minor — a smaller difference worth knowing.

Selecting who a briefing is for raises the weight of the topics that matter most to that person, so the same facts re-order around you. It never hides anything.

How area scores are computed

Each area (Identity, Body & health, Faith & conscience, Speech & press) rolls the sourced facts beneath it into a 0–100 “how protected” score. Two rules keep it realistic and honest:

  • · Where a real published index exists, we use its actual value — freedom of expression uses Freedom House (Freedom in the World), and government restriction of religion uses the Pew Government Restrictions Index. So a country reads its real figure (e.g. 9/100), not a rounded extreme.
  • · The remaining categorical facts (marriage, criminalisation, ratifications…) are mapped onto an indicative 8–92 band, so a single “worst bucket” never collapses an area to a bare 0 — nor a “best bucket” to 100.

Hover any score on the dashboard to see exactly which facts and published values produced it. Scores are a reading aid; the sourced claims beneath them are the real record.

Who a briefing is for → what it surfaces

Every source we use

A complete, de-duplicated list of every source cited anywhere in Passage — the shared datasets and the country-specific official sources linked on individual claims. Legal facts were cross-checked in an adversarial verification pass against primary and official sources.

Destination photos

Hero photos are genuine, openly-licensed landmark photography from Wikimedia Commons — one per curated country, each credited below and in-app with a link to its source. They’re optimised and bundled with the app, so no third-party image service is ever contacted. A country with no photo falls back to an original generated skyline.

Passage is a personal, informational project. Laws and indices are simplified and can be out of date. Laws differ from lived experience — this is not legal advice. Always confirm with official government channels before you travel.
