Your obligations on arrival
Address / residence registration
Foreign students must obtain a Student Pass / Class C residence permit from the Tanzania Immigration Department, applied for from outside the country before travel and issued for the duration of study.
Student work rights
A student pass authorises study only; paid employment requires a separate work/residence permit (Class A or B). Some secondary sources cite a 3-hour/day limit, but this is not confirmed in official immigration guidance.
Health insurance
Tanzania mandates inbound travel/health insurance (~USD 44, valid up to 92 days) for foreign visitors: compulsory in Zanzibar via the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation since 1 October 2024, with a mainland rollout phased in from 2026; students should confirm coverage.
Bringing medication
Personal-use prescription medicines are permitted in their original packaging with the prescription or a doctor’s letter; controlled substances require supporting documentation and quantities should stay within a reasonable personal supply (about 30-90 days).
