Is Benin safe for women travellers?
Mixed — know the gaps
Benin is a mixed picture for women travellers — the clearest concern is anti-discrimination protection (partial protection).
What to know as a woman
the sourced facts that weigh most for you · concerns first
Benin’s Constitution (art. 36) and Labour Code prohibit discrimination on grounds such as race, sex, religion and disability, but no statute bars discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity; the 2017 Digital Code (art. 552) does penalise online incitement to hatred based on sexual orientation.
Women’s legal rights are mostly equal, with some gaps — the WBL index scores 84/100 (2023) across mobility, workplace, pay, marriage, parenthood and property.
Law No. 2021-12 permits abortion up to 12 weeks where the pregnancy would aggravate or cause material, educational, professional or moral distress incompatible with the woman’s or the unborn child’s interests, and otherwise to save life/health or in cases of rape, incest or serious fetal impairment.

Your obligations on arrival
Address / residence registration
Foreign nationals, including students, staying longer than 90 days must obtain a residence card (carte de resident temporaire, valid one year) from the Direction de l’Emigration et de l’Immigration after entering on the appropriate long-stay visa.
Student work rights
Benin sets no student-specific work-hour allowance; any foreign national employed for more than 90 days needs a separate work permit tied to a confirmed job offer, so a student residence card does not by itself authorise employment.
Health insurance
Health or travel insurance is not a legal requirement to enter Benin or to obtain a student/residence permit, but medical care must be paid out of pocket, so comprehensive coverage including medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
Bringing medication
Travellers may bring prescription medicines for personal use; carry them in original labelled packaging with a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s letter, and note that medicines containing controlled substances may require prior authorisation.
