Your obligations on arrival
Address / residence registration
Foreign nationals (including students) intending to stay one year or more must register in person and obtain a residence permit at the Commissariat General des Migrations in Bujumbura; failure to do so may result in fines.
Student work rights
A study visa permits only restricted work, and foreign students generally need a Class C work/training permit assessed case by case; Burundi publishes no statutory weekly hour limit for student employment.
Health insurance
Health insurance is not a legal requirement for a Burundi visa or entry, but is strongly advised because hospitals demand upfront cash payment and serious cases are medically evacuated to Nairobi.
Bringing medication
Travellers should carry prescription medicines in their original packaging with a doctor’s prescription and verify the legality of any controlled medicines with Burundi’s Ministry of Public Health before arrival.
